GUITARREIRO
Óscar Manuel Barbedo Cardoso nasceu em 1960.
Desde cedo que a oficina do seu pai (construtor de instrumentos musicais, principalmente guitarras portuguesas "de luxo") era um dos seus locais favoritos. Nela buscava brinquedos mais interessantes que os seus (que encontrava sob a forma de ferramentas) e, de um modo geral, estímulos para uma crescente criatividade, que a escola parecia não preencher.
Mais tarde prestava-se a auxiliar o pai nas tarefas de maior esforço físico, pois Manuel Cardoso sofria de uma doença crónica e fisicamente debilitante.
Ainda assim, só no final da adolescência, quando todo o universo da construção já lhe era de certa forma familiar, o construtor acedeu a tomá-lo como aprendiz, pois ainda sonhava para o seu filho, um futuro mais normalizado e financeiramente mais seguro e estável.
Seguindo a tradição, Óscar começou pelas tarefas mais exigentes e menos precisas, passando mais tarde a restaurar os mais variados cordofones (violinos, alaúdes, guitarras clássicas, guitarras portuguesas). Assim foi ganhando precisão técnica no gesto, ampliando a sua capacidade sensorial em relação aos materiais e principalmente apurando a audição, até chegar o momento de começar a construir sozinho.
Em 1986 ingressa na Scuola Internationale de Litueria de Cremona. Aí descobre que a técnica que ele próprio já utilizava, era afinal a tradição italiana de construção, importada do mesmo local 60 anos antes por Álvaro da Silveira, mestre do seu pai, mantida e transmitida por Manuel Cardoso.
O conhecimento teórico de uma técnica que já era sua por experiência sensorial e prática deu ao Luthier a segurança e confiança para se dedicar à criatividade e vontade de inovar que sempre polvilharam a sua consciência. Se inicialmente as suas ideias se limitavam a divertir Manuel Cardoso, com o tempo os seus resultados surpreendentes no emprego de novos materiais e de inusitados processos de construção, resultando muitas vezes em instrumentos de design e produção sonora inovadores, conquistaram a sua admiração e apoio.
Recentemente, o luthier tomou como aprendiz o seu filho, João Cardoso,, que se encontra neste momento a revisitar o percurso das três gerações que o antecederam.
O direccionamento de Óscar Cardoso provém de um som que diz ouvir internamente e que continua a ser o objecto da sua busca pelo instrumento perfeito.
GUITAR MAKER
Óscar Manuel Barbedo Cardoso was born in 1960. From an early age his father's workshop (an instrument maker who specialized in portuguese "luxury" guitars) became one of his favourite places. In it he searched for more interesting toys (which he found in tools) and, in a broader sense, stimulus to an ever growing creativity that school did not appear to fulfill.
As soon as he was strong enough, he helped his father with all the physically strenuous tasks he could (Manuel Cardoso suffered from a cronic, physically imparing disease).
Dispite this, he was already in his late teens when the guitar maker finally agreed to take him as an apprentice. He still dreamed of a more normalized, economically stabler and more secure future for his son.
In the old tradition Óscar started being incumbered with the heavier, harder, and techically less demanding tasks, then he started to repair all kinds of chordophones (violins, lutes, classical guitars, portuguese guitars). In this way he was gaigning technical precison in gestures, widening his senses regarding materials and mainly refining his hearing, until the moment he started building alone.
In 1986 he is admitted in the Scuola Internationale de Litueria de Cremona and discovers that the construction technique he already used was nothing but the italian tradition, brought sixty years earlier,
from the same place by Álvaro da Silveira, his father's master. A tradition That Manuel mantaigned and transmited to Óscar.
The theoretical knowledge of a technique that was already practically and emotionally his gave the luthier the security and confidance to devote himself to all the creativity and will to inovate that bubbled in his mind forever. At first, his ideas seemed to amuse Manuel Cardoso, but with time, his surprising results in using new materials and construction processes, often giving birth to inovating design and sound producing instruments, earned his respect and support.
Recently, the luthier has taken his son, João Cardoso, as an apprentice. He is now revisiting the footsteps of three generations before him.
Óscar Cardoso's direction comes from a sound that he has always heard in his mind and this remains the object of his search for the perfect instrument.
